Nesting During Pregnancy: Don't Forget Yourself!

A woman cradles a baby on a sofa in a cozy room with plants. She's wearing a light blue sweater, and the mood is calm and tender.

We often here the phrase "nesting" during pregnancy in reference to the third-trimester urge to prepare the home and nursery for the upcoming arrival of the baby. Expecting moms go to incredible lengths to curate the perfect space for their little one to flourish, creating lovely, calming spaces and anticipating their child's every want. I love the idea of a "Nesting Party", which I've seen replace baby showers more and more in recent years. Friends and family get together and wash and fold the baby's clothes, put together cribs or swings, prep freezer meals, etc. However, these same parents are not encouraged to make their OWN nest. They will be in just as much need of tender, loving care and peaceful surroundings as their baby. If I meet with a family prenatally, I suggest that they pick a place in their house to act as home base and take some time to consider what they could prepare, in addition to baby supplies, to nurture themselves or support their healing. This will look different depending on the parents and what brings them comfort, but it may include things like:

  • a cozy blanket

  • comfy pillows

  • a water bottle

  • hydration powders like Liquid IV

  • nourishing snacks

  • ibuprofen or other medications

  • artwork

  • affirmation cards

  • chargers

  • unscented lotion

  • headbands/hair ties

  • books/e-reader

  • a journal and pens

  • fuzzy socks

  • prayer cards or other religious objects

  • chapstick

  • heating pad for cramps

  • a small rolling cart or TV table

Remember to give yourself grace during this tender time. The right to rest does not have to be earned, and even if it did, YOU JUST GREW A WHOLE HUMAN (or two or three...).
