Are you allowed to breastfeed in public in NC?

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

Even if you try to time outings with your breastfeeding infant so that meals happen at home, babies have their own schedules. Whether they're hungry more often due to a growth spurt, the weather is hot so they're thirsty, or the environment is overwhelming and they need a bit of comfort, there will come a time when baby needs to nurse outside of the home.

You have options, depending on your comfort levels. If you prefer using a cover, you can pick whatever spot looks good to you. Public breastfeeding is protected in all 50 states. So, if you are legally allowed to be there, you are legally allowed to breastfeed there. If you and baby are most comfortable without a cover, good news! Breastfeeding dyads are exempt from indecent exposure laws.

You can also check out the Mamava App, which can help you find enclosed nursing spaces near you.

Whatever your choice, people will have opinions about it, and some may feel entitled to share it. You may want to spend some time thinking about what you'd like to say in a situation like this. Would you rather focus on the fact that you are the parent, and that gives you the authority to decide what choices are best for your family? Or mention your legal protections? Or perhaps speak about how we don't expect adults to eat in bathrooms or under blankets? You could even role play with a friend or your partner to help you feel more at ease.

However you decide to feed your baby, you deserve support and respect. This is a challenging season, and you are doing a wonderful job!
